Pre-trip a friend warned me that I may starve to death down there if I refused to eat meat. They even cook the vegetables in chorizo, she said.
Not one to be deterred, I knew on a tropical island I would find plenty to tide me over. There was an endless abundance of fresh coconuts for a dollar or two. Papaya, bread fruit, star fruit, grapefruit, banana, and "dragon eye" trees abounded. The hotel we stayed at, the Rainforest Inn, which was quite literally nestled within the rainforest, had all of these on the property, and we could literally pick our fruit fresh off the tree. How awesome is that?

We literally stumbled upon it after leaving El Yunque.
Moral of the story: No matter where you go, you'll always be able to find vegetarian and vegan options, you just may have to look harder! A good place to start: download the Happy Cow app or check out Happycow.net to find vegan and vegetarian options.
