If I Can Juice Fast, You Can Too

Juice Fast: 1 Day, 6 Juices
I'll spare you the details, but let's just say I was forced into a juice fast.

Don't get me wrong. I love me some fresh squeezed vegetable juice. Green Lemonade, Veggie Cooler, Mineral Madness. They're great, BUT, I've never actually done a juice FAST. I like to eat, thank you.

The idea of giving up real food for several days seems lovely in concept but unrealistic in practice. I always say I'm going to do one, and I start off great! I wake up, have a green juice for breakfast, get hungry a couple hours later, and poof,  I find myself on the lunch line. "I don't really need to juice fast," I would say to myself. "I eat so healthy."

So, what made me change my mind, and forgo all solid food for 5 days in favor of liquid vegetables? Well, if you must know, I got food poisoning, and it was so awful, I wouldn't wish it upon my arch-nemesis if I had one. Eight hours of pure torture. As you can imagine, I didn't even want to think about food. Perfect time for a juice fast!

Ok, so I suppose I had a bit of an advantage there, but TRUST me, juice fasts are like getting a tattoo. If you do it once, you'll definitely want to do it twice!

So what magical things can you expect to happen on your juice fast?

  • Increased energy
  • Increased ability to focus and be creative
  • Lose a few pounds
And, I busted some juice fast myths:
  • I didn't feel weak from not eating. In fact I had more energy! Why? Because my body didnt have to expend energy digesting.
  • I didn't feel tired from lack of nourishment. Let's be serious, I probably got more vitamins and minerals in one juice than most Americans get in a day.
  • I wasn't cranky. I thought I was absolutely delightful to be around.
Thinking about embarking on a juice fast of your own? Here are a few tips:

  1. Juice during the week: You'll be distracted at work, and won't have time to mindlessly munch at home. Plus, on the weekends, your friends are going to want to go out, and you don't want to be lame.
  2. Make your own/buy from local juicery: The whole point of fresh juice, is that its fresh. Try to make (or have made) all the juices you will need for the day first thing in the morning. I don't recommend anything you can buy off the shelf, no matter how fresh they say it is.
  3. Drink water, too: Yes, you'll be drinking plenty of liquid, but don't forget to drink water too! It will ensure you are hydrated and aid in elimination/detoxification.

    1. Hi Tara,

I assure you, it's not as scary as it seems!

The most important thing is to stick to vegetable juice. Fruit juice is too sugary. An apple or pear thrown in for sweetness here or there is ok, but stick to mostly veggies.

I actually had these made at a juice shop, but in general,
I stuck mostly to all green vegetable juices (kale, celery, cucumber, parsley, lemon, those kinds of things) and some root vegetables juices (Beet, Carrot, etc). I would say do 4 greens and 2 something else to mix it up. Fresh coconut water is good, too.

The greener your juice, the cleaner you'll be :)

If making at home, you can try these two recipes for green juice: http://www.thebombshelldiet.com/2012/04/how-to-make-green-juice-taste-great.html

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes!
